Coffee Origins
The Gathiga factory sits right around 1,700 meters above sea level in Murang’a County. It maximizes their production by following trainings in good Agricultural practices, with the application of manure and inputs when required. Gathiga Coffee Factory is part of Kandara C.G.C.S. Ltd were it’s 1 of 11 factories. From funds set aside from the previous year’s harvest, members of the cooperative can access pre-financing for school fees, access to farm inputs and funds for emergency needs. The factory is receiving assistance from a field partner – Coffee Management Services (CMS).
In line with the rising awareness on the need to conserve the environment, the factory has dug the waste water soak pits away from the water source where the waste water is allowed to soak in back to the soil. Currently the factory does not engage in waste water treatment.
Additionally the society encourages its members to plant trees on their farms. Gathiga Coffee factory is run by a factory manager who oversees all activities within the factory. Together with other staff members they carry out duties such as weighing coffee, selection and grading of coffee, paying farmers and addressing farmers’ complaints.
A peaberry is a natural mutation of a coffee bean inside its cherry.
Normally, a coffee fruit has two flat beans, but a peaberry occurs when the beans donot split into two and the result is one round bean.
Peaberries are extremely dense and slightly smaller than flat beans.
This happens to only 5% of the world’s coffee.

FAQs
Single origins: Our roast style and green coffee preference suits both filter and espresso very well.
Each coffee with present different characteristics you may prefer through a specific brew method.
For example Dario loves washed Kenyan’s through the AeroPress, but they taste great as espresso and through the V60.
Blends: Designed with espresso in mind but Dreamer tastes great in the plunger. It’s all down to personal preference!
