Coffee Origins

Kamwangi Peaberry makes its return for the second year in a row, with its deep and sweet profile that we have grown to love over the past few seasons. Peaberry coffees are coffee beans that grow alone in a cherry, unlike non-peaberry beans, which will grow as a pair of beans in a coffee cherry. This gives them a rounder shape and smaller size compared to their AB and AA counterparts. Deeper sweetness and more balance highlights the drinking experience of this coffee, with flavours of blackberry and red grape, richer sweetness with a more delicate, tartaric acidity makes this the perfect third in our trinity of Kamwangi coffees this season.
Kamwangi Coffee Factory is located in the Kirinyaga region of Kenya. Servicing well over 1,000 farmers in the surrounding area, Kamwangi has become famous for its high-quality, true-to-origin coffees with high sweetness and bright acidity. Established in the early 80s, it has been producing some of the best washed coffees from the famous Kirinyaga region for the past 40 years. We had the privilege of visiting the factory in 2025 on our first buying trip to Kenya. Driving up to the factory, we never seemed to stop climbing, and the jungle around us seemed to get denser around every bend. The factory seemed unassuming at first glance, but as we approached the first of the wet mills, the drying beds cascaded down the slope into the valley below the entrance to the station. As we gazed further into the valley and across the horizon, Mount Kenya towered over the surrounding landscape in the distance. Truly awe-inspiring scenes.
We got to meet some of the farmers who sell to the factory and see their crops of mostly Batian and Ruiru 11 trees. Farmers in the area raise small livestock, as well as avocados and macadamia nuts, to supplement their income throughout the year. For us, Kamwangi is a name associated with excellence; for these farmers, it’s just a small part of their livelihood, far removed from our cupping protocols and tasting notes. Yet, year after year, we keep selecting coffees from this factory. This is our 7th season buying Kamwangi coffee, and it has become a theme in the roastery that each year we cup our final options for our Kenyan shipment blind, and each year we blindly select multiple coffees from Kamwangi from a table of 20+ different coffees. We love it!

FAQs

What is the best brew method for each coffee?

Single origins: Our roast style and green coffee preference suits both filter and espresso very well.

Each coffee with present different characteristics you may prefer through a specific brew method.

For example Dario loves washed Kenyan’s through the AeroPress, but they taste great as espresso and through the V60.

Blends: Designed with espresso in mind but Dreamer tastes great in the plunger. It’s all down to personal preference!
